Deep within Hanover’s Nordstadt, lies a place where time seems to pause: the Old Jewish Cemetery. This is not just a burial ground. It is a testament to centuries of Jewish life in Northern Germany.

The Old Jewish Cemetery on the Oberstrasse is the oldest Jewish cemetery in Northern Germany. Imagine this hill in the middle of a residential area. Here stand hundreds of old gravestones. They stand beneath tall trees. It is like a walled island of the departed.

This cemetery dates back to around 1550. It remained in use until 1864. For over three centuries, it served as the final resting place for Hanover’s Jewish community.

Notice the unique way the burials were conducted here. The burials happened in several layers of earth, one above the other. Jewish tradition dictates that graves must remain undisturbed forever. They cannot be used more than once. To create more space, the community artificially raised the mound.

Originally, the entrance was on the west side. After the cemetery closed in 1864, the entrance shifted. Now, it is through the side gate on the east. Look above the gate. You will see the symbol of the Priestly Blessing.

Among the 700 remaining headstones, you will find rabbis and community leaders. Men, women, young, and old all lie here. They represent three centuries of Jewish life. The oldest headstone belongs to Salman Gans. It dates back to 1654. This cemetery is also the resting place for Heinrich Heine’s forefathers. His grandfather and great-grandfather are buried here.

During the Nazi era, there were plans to destroy this sacred place. The NSDAP wanted to level the mound. SA men watched over the cemetery from the nearby Mottenburg tavern. It was their meeting place. Miraculously, the Old Jewish Cemetery survived. It was expropriated in 1943 but remained unharmed.

The Old Jewish Cemetery stands as a cultural landmark. It is a reminder of Hanover’s Jewish community. Its story is one of resilience and faith. Its stones whisper tales of lives lived, families built, and traditions upheld. As you wander through this serene space, remember the generations who came before us.
