Bring your camera when you visit Old Glory Park. The views of NYC at night are spectacular. It is a great spot to watch the Fourth of July fireworks. Get here early to secure a good viewing spot.
Don Roy visited Old Glory Park in October 2012. He found it a bit cold but the air flow was nice. He did the run twice and hit the blood rock. Alex H did the deed there in the 1700s. The rock is red. Watch out for skunks and raccoons late at night.
Old Glory Lookout features a tall flagpole. A tablet says it was erected by citizens and school children. It honors the homecoming of Admiral George Dewey after his victory. The victory occurred in Manila Bay May 1 1898.
Homecoming refers to Dewey’s return to the USA. He spent a year in the Philippines. On April 24 1898 the US and Spain were at war. Dewey’s Asiatic Squadron was ordered to leave Hong Kong. They moved to Mirs Bay on the Chinese coast. On April 27 they departed for the Philippines. Dewey and his fleet reached Manila Bay on the evening of April 30. The following day they defeated the Spanish fleet.
Dewey fever swept across the United States. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in mid-May. With the Spanish fleet destroyed Dewey’s Asiatic Squadron blockaded Manila. They awaited the arrival of the American army. The first units arrived at the end of June. Manila surrendered on August 15 1898. The United States signed an Armistice with Spain two days earlier. During the remainder of Dewey’s stay the Navy played a minor part. They suppressed the Filipino uprising against the American occupation. This was known as the Philippine American War.
In March 1899 Congress appointed Dewey Admiral of the Navy. On the late afternoon of May 20 1899 the OLYMPIA steamed slowly past Corregidor Island. It went out of Manila Bay. It had been one year and twenty days since Dewey first arrived in the Philippines. During that time he never left the islands. On September 26 1899 the OLYMPIA reached the coast of the United States. Dewey led a victory parade in New York City on September 30 1899. He also participated in celebrations in Washington DC and Montpelier Vermont. Dewey Fever was at its peak. Anything and everything possible was created bearing the image of Dewey and OLYMPIA. This included soap furniture and toys. Old Glory Park offers not only scenic views but also a rich history.
