Flour. Can you almost smell it? We’re standing before the Old Flour Mill in Ipswich. This grand old building, erected in 1901, wasn’t always about boutique shops and ghost stories. It was once the beating heart of Queensland’s flour production. Imagine the air thick with the aroma of freshly milled “Snowcloud” flour, the brand first produced here by the Ipswich Flour Milling Company. The building itself, designed by renowned Ipswich architect George Brockwell Gill, is a testament to the industrial era. Its three stories and a basement, with that distinctive single-story section on the side, originally housed the mill’s office. Notice the dark brick columns and the decorative light brickwork? That was classic Brockwell Gill. Over the years, the Old Flour Mill has seen its fair share of change. Cribb & Foote, the iconic Queensland name, purchased the building in 1910, even adding a stove showroom. But perhaps the most intriguing chapter began in 1984 with Bert and Bev De Wit. Their renovations, while transforming the mill into the shopping arcade we see today, also awakened a resident ghost! They say it’s Hubert, a young worker who tragically died in the mill after his illness was dismissed. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the Old Flour Mill’s rich history and captivating presence are undeniable.
