Old Cambridge Baptist Church

A captivating stained-glass window beckons. This is the Old Cambridge Baptist Church. Its story begins not with grand pronouncements but with a quiet split. In 1844 several members of Cambridge’s First Baptist Church sought a new path. They formed their own congregation. Their initial meeting place was eventually sold. It became the North Avenue Congregational Church. The Old Cambridge Baptist Church as we know it emerged in 1869. A larger Gothic Revival building was constructed. Architect Alexander Rice Esty designed this impressive structure. Built from local fieldstone and Somerville granite it stands as a testament to American Gothic Revival architecture. The heavy gray stone contrasts beautifully with delicate stained glass windows. The windows are both revealed and protected by the strong stone walls. Tragedy struck in 1897. A fire destroyed the original parish hall. Clarence Blackall a renowned Boston theater architect oversaw the reconstruction. A highlight of the rebuild is an 1890 Tiffany & Company window. This exquisite piece bridges the Gothic and Art Nouveau styles. The Old Cambridge Baptist Church is more than a building. It’s a vibrant community hub. It houses the Homeless Empowerment Project. This project publishes the Spare Change News street newspaper. The Jos Mateo Ballet Theatre also calls the church home. So do the Adbar Ethiopian Women’s Alliance and the Cambridge Child and Family Associates. The church’s history is rich with influential figures. Ezra Palmer Gould served as pastor in 1868. He was a well-known Christian author. Other notable pastors include Rev Sam Miller Rev Ernst Klein Rev Linda Brebner Rev Monica Styron and Rev Meg Hess. Each pastor shaped the church’s identity. They guided it through social and political changes. Lay members too played crucial roles. The Derry family was instrumental in the church’s work for decades. Pauline Swift a dedicated activist was known for her tireless work for social justice. She even declared the church a sanctuary during a 1970 antiwar riot. Martha Jane Hackett a beloved member served in numerous roles. Thomas Jones the current Minister of Music has elevated the church’s musical program.
