Embark on a journey to Ojoin Temple, a place steeped in the whispers of history and the echoes of devotion. Ojoin Temple, also known as Rokumanji Temple, has been a sanctuary of Pure Land beliefs since the Heian period. The Nissokan ritual, a practice of praying for paradise while watching the sunset, once flourished here. Ojoin Temple holds the memory of Masayuki Kusunoki, a figure from the Nanbokucho period whose grave rests within the temple grounds. The story of Ojoin Temple begins with a dream. Lord Yoshimatsu Kawase, guided by a dream and the words of the nembutsu priest Yasuke Shonin, left Rokumanji Temple in ruins. On this land, Ojoin Temple was born. Yasuke Shonin, gazing at the setting sun each day, performed the Go-nen-mon gate ritual. He declared the east gate of Totennoji Temple to be the center of Jokaku Raku’s east gate. From this point forward, Ojoin Temple prospered, drawing those who yearned for paradise. Ojoin Temple is also deeply connected to Masayuki Kusunoki, the eldest son of Masashige Kusunoki. Masayuki fought on the Southern Court side during the Nanbokucho period. His tombstone remains, a silent testament to his loyalty. Today, Ojoin Temple welcomes visitors daily from 6:00 am to 4:30 pm. It’s not primarily a sightseeing temple, but a place for quiet reflection and connection with history. Ojoin Temple’s story is a blend of dreams, devotion, and historical echoes. It offers a glimpse into the rich spiritual tapestry of Japan.
