This was in response to a critical need for more officers following the Sino-Indian War. Brigadier Ram Singh the first commandant inaugurated the Chennai school in 1963.
The academy wasn’t always what you see today. It initially trained officers for Emergency Commissions. However in 1965 it shifted focus to the Short Service Regular Commission which later became the Short Service Commission. In 1985 it earned permanent status. On January 1 1988 it received its current prestigious name the Officers Training Academy.
