“A charming green oasis” they called it. That’s what the Ökostation Freiburg truly is. Nestled in Freiburg’s Seepark this remarkable environmental education center stands as a testament to sustainable living.

Built initially for the 1986 State Horticultural Show the Ökostation quickly became a beloved Freiburg landmark. It boasted a solar panel system a green wooden dome roof and a thriving organic garden. Think of it a beacon of eco-consciousness in its time. Sadly a fire ravaged the original structure in 1987 destroying the wooden house completely. But the spirit of the Ökostation wasn’t extinguished.

Thanks to insurance funds and the support of the city of Freiburg and the BUND the Ökostation was reborn in 1991. This time even better. The new building retained the charm of its predecessor its Hogan-style wooden dome and green roof. But upgrades were made to meet modern environmental standards. The wood itself is locally sourced Tannenholz from the Black Forest. The walls are made of clay and sandstone and the inner doors and windows were salvaged from old houses. A testament to resourcefulness.

The Ökostation’s energy concept is nothing short of impressive. It’s designed as a low-energy house. Photovoltaic panels once largely powered the Ökostation’s energy needs. Excess energy went into the local grid. Since 2000 however all the generated energy is sold. The Ökostation now relies on eco-friendly electricity from the grid. Heating has also undergone a green transformation. Since 2009 biogas fuels the low-temperature gas heating system making the Ökostation virtually CO2-neutral. An EMAS certification confirms this eco-friendly status. A wood-burning stove and solar thermal collectors supplement hot water production. Clever use of clay walls acts as a heat buffer. The winter garden minimizes heat loss. Even the roof insulation is ingenious made from recycled paper flakes. Rainwater collected in a cistern waters the beautiful gardens.

These gardens are a highlight of the Ökostation covering some 2500 square meters. There’s a wonderful herb garden inspired by medieval monastery gardens containing over 150 species of herbs. A vegetable garden showcases organic gardening principles. Then there is a Bauerngarten featuring rare perennials and multiple small biotopes. Think of a temple for amphibians a dry-stone biotope for reptiles and a butterfly garden with a wildflower meadow. The Ökostation is truly a place of wonder and discovery. It is open to the public and free to explore.

The Ökostation Freiburg isn’t just a building; it’s a living example of environmental responsibility. It’s a place of learning inspiring Freiburg and beyond with its innovative projects and educational programs. It has received several UNESCO awards recognizing its commitment to sustainable development. For years the Ökostation has been a successful example of how to combine environmental protection with education and community engagement. It’s a place worth exploring and understanding.
