Did you ever hear of a place named after two rivers? The Oder-Spree district in eastern Germany takes its name from the Spree and Oder rivers. The Oder River marks the eastern border of Oder-Spree. The Spree River gracefully curves through the district. Imagine standing at the confluence of these two waterways, a place where history and nature intertwine. Oder-Spree is more than just a geographical location. It’s a tapestry woven with threads of history, culture, and natural beauty. The district was formed in 1993. Three districts, Eisenhüttenstadt, Beeskow, and Fürstenwalde, merged together, along with the independent city of Eisenhüttenstadt, to create Oder-Spree. The coat of arms of Oder-Spree tells a story of its own. It’s a visual representation of the three original districts. The top-left quarter displays the coat of arms of the Bishops of Lebus, who held their seat in Fürstenwalde. The second quarter features the checkered bar of the Cistercian Order. This symbolizes Neuzelle Abbey, which owned most of the land that later became the Eisenhüttenstadt district. The bottom quarters represent the former Beeskow district. Three knives symbolize the Lords of Strehla. A deer antler represents the Lords of Biberstein. In 1317, the Lords of Biberstein succeeded the Lords of Strehla as the rulers of Beeskow and Storkow. Oder-Spree’s largest town is Fürstenwalde, with a population of around 31,000. The administrative capital, however, is the charming town of Beeskow. As you explore Oder-Spree, you’ll discover a land of contrasts. From the bustling towns to the tranquil countryside, the region offers a unique blend of urban and rural life. This is reflected in its diverse landscape. The Spreewald, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is a maze of waterways and forests. The Oderbruch, a vast polder landscape, stands as a testament to human ingenuity. The Oder-Spree district invites you to delve deeper into its rich history and culture. Discover the stories behind its towns and villages. Explore the natural wonders that shape its identity. Immerse yourself in the unique charm that makes Oder-Spree a truly unforgettable destination.
