Is it possible for a textile to tell a story? Absolutely, especially here at Ock Pop Tok Heritage. Ock Pop Tok, meaning East Meets West in Lao, is more than just a craft center. It is a living testament to the beauty and resilience of Lao textiles and the communities that create them.
Founded in 2000 by British entrepreneur Joanna Smith and Lao weaver Veomanee Douangdala, Ock Pop Tok began with a simple desire. They wanted to elevate the profile of Lao textiles internationally. They also aimed to create economic opportunities for local artisans. What started as a small shop with five weavers has blossomed into a thriving social enterprise. Today, Ock Pop Tok supports over 500 artisans across Laos.
Here at the Ock Pop Tok Heritage, you will witness firsthand the intricate process of silk creation. You can observe the skilled weavers at work. Ock Pop Tok’s commitment extends beyond aesthetics. Every product is handmade following fair trade principles. Transparency and accountability are key. Locally sourced materials are preferred. Environmental sustainability is always considered. The weavers are the heart of Ock Pop Tok. They receive fair wages, respect, and opportunities for growth.

Did you know that Ock Pop Tok also works with rural artisans through the Village Weavers Project? This initiative provides skills and product development training to women from ethnic communities across Laos. We support the revival of disappearing techniques like Tai Lue indigo cotton weaving and Hmong embroidery.
Our dedication to preservation led to the creation of Fabric2Fibre. This registered charity collects and documents heritage Lao textiles. Our small gallery displays one of the country’s most comprehensive hill tribe textile collections. The exhibitions rotate regularly.
