On this very spot, centuries ago, herds of oxen were driven through the “Tor an der Kahle” to graze on pastures by the Lusatian Neisse River. It is this historical use that lends its name to the impressive structure before us – the Ochsenbastei, meaning “Ox Bastion”. This well-preserved remnant of Görlitz’s medieval fortifications dates back to the 14th century, standing as a testament to the city’s defensive prowess. While the original gate, the “Tor an der Kahle”, was demolished in 1834, the Ochsenbastei, with its rounded form and adjoining oxen enclosure, survived. Today, it stands as a protected cultural monument, offering a glimpse into Görlitz’s rich past.

The Ochsenbastei is more than just a relic of a bygone era. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine. As you ascend to the “Brunnenterrasse” you’ll find a charming Baroque-style garden, a tranquil oasis amidst the city’s bustle. This garden, built between 1962 and 1963, is a testament to the community spirit of Görlitz. The plans were drawn by then-garden director Henry Kraft and the garden itself was built with the help of unpaid volunteers as part of the “Nationales Aufbauwerk,” a nationwide reconstruction program.

The upper terrace, once home to outbuildings serving houses on Kränzelstraße, boasts breathtaking views of the city. The transformation of these terraces into public spaces highlights how the Ochsenbastei continues to evolve, adapting to the needs of the present while honoring its past. Next time you enjoy a picnic on the upper terrace, imagine the oxen slowly making their way to the pastures, their hooves echoing against the cobblestones, a sound now replaced by the laughter of children playing in this peaceful haven. The Ochsenbastei is a reminder that even in the heart of a bustling city, whispers of the past linger, waiting to be heard.
