Established in 1997, the Oceanside Museum of Art began its journey in 1995. A group of citizens envisioned a museum. They overcame many obstacles. They brought their vision to life. The Oceanside City Council supported them. They approved the lease for the historic Irving Gill Building. This building became the museum’s first home.

The Oceanside Museum of Art is housed in two buildings. These buildings were designed by Irving Gill and Frederick Fisher. They were both modernist architects from Southern California. The classic Irving Gill building stands next to the contemporary Frederick Fisher Central Pavilion. This creates a union of past and present architecture. In 2008, a contemporary expansion was completed. Frederick Fisher designed this three-level expansion. It seamlessly melded with the original Irving Gill building.

Inside the Oceanside Museum of Art, you will find a diverse range of art. The focus is on contemporary artists from Southern California. You can see paintings. You can see sculptures. Furniture, art quilts, fiber designs, and glass are also exhibited. The Oceanside Museum of Art offers more than just exhibitions. It also hosts classes, lectures, tours, and concerts. Films and special events are also part of the program. The Oceanside Museum of Art even organizes chartered travel to other cultural art exhibits.

Each year, the Oceanside Museum of Art presents over a dozen modern and contemporary art exhibitions. These exhibitions often extend to other community locations. The museum attracts around 25,000 visitors annually. This includes 4,000 students. These students participate in various programs.

In 2015, the Oceanside Museum of Art showcased “Project PAINT”. This exhibition featured over 100 works of art. These works came from an arts program for prisoners. The program provided a safe way for prisoners to express themselves.
