Gazing at the Oceanides II Sculpture, do you see dolphins leaping or mythical sprites dancing in the waves? This bronze artwork, affectionately known as the “Sea Nymphs” by locals, sits at the edge of Fairy Bower pool in Manly. Oceanides II evokes the spirit of the Okeanides from Greek mythology, those beings of the sea, both human and creature. The original Oceanides sculpture, crafted by Helen Leete in 1997, graced this spot for 18 years. It was a beloved part of the coastal walk between Manly Beach and Fairy Bower. Tragically, the fierce storms of June 2016 damaged the ceramic artwork. The community rallied, raising funds alongside the Northern Beaches Council to bring the Sea Nymphs back to life. In September 2017, Oceanides II was reborn, cast in durable bronze and secured with rust-proof steel. Now these captivating figures appear to move with the waves, especially when the sea is rough. Their dynamic forms capture the energy of the ocean, a constant reminder of the mythical world just beneath the surface.
