Dug in the 19th century, did you know that the Obvodny Canal basin wasn’t initially intended for what it became? It was conceived as a flood defense. However, it soon transformed into a vital water transport corridor. Today, we’re standing at what’s sometimes marked as the “Obvodny Canal basin”.

The Obvodny Canal stretches for 8 kilometers. It acted as the southern boundary of St. Petersburg. Imagine the city’s limits defined by this very waterway. Its journey begins at the Neva River near Alexander Nevsky Lavra. The canal ends at the Yekaterinhofka.

Construction spanned several decades. Work started in 1769 and continued until 1780. Later, more work was done from 1805 to 1833. Engineer L. K. Carbonnier designed the initial channel. It ran from the Yekaterinhofka River to the Ligovsky Canal.

Initially, the Obvodny Canal featured a bulwark on the city side. Think of it as a defensive embankment protecting the city. In 1804, Ivan Gerard started construction on the eastern part. The city allocated substantial funds for the project. Later, Paul Clapeyron and Pierre-Dominique Bazaine managed the works. By 1834, the Obvodny Canal was a significant borderline. It measured over 10 km long and 20 m wide.

The French Basin extended from the Obvodny Canal near Alexander Nevsky Lavra. It turned west from Glinyanaya Street. The Obvodny Canal widened significantly here. This widening created the basin we sometimes call the “Obvodny Canal basin.” Railroads once crisscrossed the peninsula here.

In the second half of the 19th century, the Obvodny Canal’s character changed dramatically. The areas around the Obvodny Canal became industrialized. The canal became a wastewater sewer. Yet, it remained a cheap transport route. Two major railway stations opened nearby, Varshavsky and Baltiysky.

Today, the Obvodny Canal is quite shallow. Only small crafts can navigate it. It is no longer a major waterway. The embankments now serve as important city routes. Redevelopment projects aim to revitalize former industrial buildings.

Interestingly, in 1820, it was even designated as the “City Moat”. The Obvodny Canal has 15 automobile bridges and 6 pedestrian bridges. Only one railroad bridge crosses it.

The Obvodny Canal has undergone significant reconstruction. The banks were reinforced with stone walls. In some areas, there are even double-level embankments. Tunnels were constructed along the canal during bridge reconstructions.

The Obvodny Canal basin stands as a testament to St. Petersburg’s evolving history. From flood defense to industrial waterway to urban thoroughfare, its story is etched in every stone.
