Did you know that the Obukhovsky Zavod’s history stretches back to 1863? Right here before us stands a testament to Russian industrial might. This isn’t just a factory it’s a living legend.

The Obukhovsky Zavod wasn’t born overnight. It was the brainchild of several ambitious individuals. Engineers Pavel Obukhov and Nikolay Putilov along with merchant S G Kudryavtsev envisioned a plant capable of producing high-quality crucible steel. Obukhov’s innovative steelmaking techniques were key. The resulting steel proved perfect for cannons. The Russian Navy was a vital supporter from the start understanding the crucial need for domestic artillery production.

Initially the Obukhovsky Zavod faced considerable financial difficulties. A substantial amount of money was tied up in advance orders before a single cannon was even produced. The Russian Navy stepped in again. They appointed a colonel as general manager. This stabilized the company. The Obukhovsky Zavod started to deliver. By 1866 satisfactory models of cannons were ready. The Russian Navy’s independence from foreign artillery suppliers was ensured.

However the Obukhovsky Zavod did not simply copy designs from other nations such as Krupp. Russian orders for artillery were essential for Krupp’s own expansion. The Obukhovsky Zavod’s production contributed to that expansion. Interestingly the Obukhovsky Zavod’s early designs were similar to Prussian and early German systems.

The Obukhovsky Zavod’s role extended far beyond cannons. Over the years it produced an astonishing array of products. This included ammunition armor plates cold arms drawing instruments turning tools surgical aids car axles steamboat shafts and even household appliances.

After the 1917 revolution the plant was renamed Bolshevik Plant No 232. It supplied equipment for metallurgical works tubes escalators and even tunnel shields for the Moscow Metro. During World War II it switched back to military production. After the war it contributed to the Soviet nuclear and space programs. Amazing.

The Obukhovsky Zavod regained its original name in 1992. Today it continues its legacy. It supplies various industries from oil and minerals to power engineering. It also manufactures antenna units for military and commercial applications. This plant gave its name to the surrounding area and a nearby railway station. The Obukhovsky Zavod’s history is a reflection of Russia’s own dynamic industrial and military past. A history you can almost touch standing here today.
