What if I told you that right here in Arequipa, nestled in the district of Sachaca, lies a place where science and volcanoes intertwine? This is the Observatorio Vulcanológico del Sur, or OVS, a sentinel watching over the fiery giants of southern Peru. The Observatorio Vulcanológico del Sur isn’t just a building; it’s a testament to Peru’s commitment to understanding and respecting the powerful forces beneath our feet. In 1988, the seeds of the OVS were sown with the first observations of the reawakening Sabancaya volcano after two centuries of slumber. By 1990, a network of seismic sensors was in place, taking the pulse of this fiery mountain. The OVS has witnessed the Sabancaya’s eruptions, both from 1990 to 1998 and its ongoing activity since 2016. It has also monitored the Ubinas volcano’s eruptions from 2006 to 2009, 2013 to 2017, and again in 2019. The data gathered and shared by the Observatorio Vulcanológico del Sur has been instrumental in protecting nearly two million people in southern Peru. Today, the OVS monitors not just Sabancaya and Misti in Arequipa, and Ubinas in Moquegua, but thirteen of Peru’s sixteen active and potentially active volcanoes. Nearly a hundred instruments feed real-time data to the observatory every minute, allowing experts to keep a close watch on volcanic activity. The Observatorio Vulcanológico del Sur is more than just a monitoring station. It’s a hub of scientific expertise, with over thirty Peruvian professionals dedicated to the study of volcanoes. Six hold doctorates, seven have master’s degrees, and a team of engineers and specialists provide crucial support. Their research, often conducted in partnership with international institutions like the USGS and JICA, delves into the intricate dynamics of volcanoes. They strive to understand the processes before, during, and after an eruption, constantly refining models to predict volcanic activity. The Observatorio Vulcanológico del Sur stands as a beacon of scientific advancement. The modern OVS facility, inaugurated in 2022 in Sachaca, 24 km from Misti’s crater, houses the CENVUL, Peru’s 24/7 volcano monitoring service. This four-story building, constructed on solid rock, is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, research offices, and an auditorium. Its independent power supply ensures uninterrupted operation even during emergencies. In November 2024, the OVS hosted a meeting unveiling “Volcanes Perú: IGP 24/7,” a web platform providing real-time monitoring data. This tool empowers local authorities with the information they need to make swift, science-backed decisions in the face of volcanic activity. The Observatorio Vulcanológico del Sur is a vital resource, a symbol of Peru’s dedication to safeguarding its people and its future against the ever-present power of the volcanoes.
