Did you notice the Glockenturm? It stands near the Oberst Wilhelm Staehle Sculpture. We are here to remember a man of courage and conviction. This is the Oberst Wilhelm Staehle Sculpture. It commemorates a brave soul who stood against the tide of National Socialism.

Wilhelm Staehle was born in 1877. He died in 1945. Staehle’s life was one of military service and resistance. He served in the Prussian Army. Later, he became a counterintelligence officer. His journey took a sharp turn as the Nazi regime rose to power.

Staehle’s opposition to the Nazis stemmed from his deep-rooted beliefs. He held a conservative outlook influenced by Dutch Calvinism. Staehle and his wife, Hildegard, actively helped persecuted people. They were part of the “Church Aid Office for Protestant non-Aryans.”

From the late 1930s, Staehle used his position to aid those in need. He was the commandant of the veterans’ housing estate in Berlin-Frohnau. This role allowed him to provide shelter and support to those targeted by the regime.

Staehle’s involvement extended beyond helping individuals. He had connections to civilian resistance circles and counterintelligence. Carl Goerdeler, a key figure in the resistance, tasked Staehle with a crucial mission. Staehle was to inform Dutch resistance groups about the planned overthrow of Hitler.

After a successful coup, Staehle was designated to take over military command in Holland and Belgium. This was planned for a transitional period after July 20, 1944. However, the best-laid plans often go awry.

In June 1944, Staehle was arrested. His wife was arrested two months later. In March 1945, the People’s Court sentenced Staehle to two years in prison. His crime was aiding a political prisoner.

The end came swiftly and brutally. On the night of April 22-23, 1945, Staehle was murdered. A special detachment from the Reich Security Main Office shot him near Lehrter Straße Prison in Berlin.

The Oberst Wilhelm Staehle Sculpture serves as a reminder of his sacrifice. It is located in the Invalidensiedlung, between houses 11 and 12. The memorial includes a bronze plaque. It honors Staehle’s resistance and his ultimate sacrifice.

Let us remember Wilhelm Staehle. He was a man who stood for what he believed in. He acted with courage in the face of overwhelming evil. His story echoes through time. It inspires us to stand up for justice and resist oppression in all its forms.
