Pointing towards the sky the Obélisque oblique stands tall. Its stainless steel gleams. It’s a gift from France a symbol of Expo 67.

The Obélisque oblique is more than just a sculpture. It’s a statement. Created by Henri-Georges Adam in 1962 it arrived in Montreal for the World’s Fair. Its sharp angles reach out in different directions. They represent the pulls and pressures of modern life. Think of the crossroads of many routes. The Obélisque oblique points to them all.

The Obélisque oblique wasn’t always here. Its initial location was near the French Pavilion. When the pavilion became a casino the Obélisque oblique moved slightly. Its new home is still in Parc Jean-Drapeau.

The Obélisque oblique is unique. Instead of the usual carvings on an obelisk it has four smooth forms. They’re attached to its pointed top. They’re like blank directional arrows. These arrows signify the multitude of paths open to modern humanity.

Adam himself was a fascinating man. A printmaker and surrealist he transitioned to sculpture in 1942. He created Le Gisant a major work the same year. He also worked with tapestries. His art reflects his time. It speaks of industrialization the two World Wars. It’s a search for a language of modernity. Interestingly Adam died the same year the Obélisque oblique was unveiled. His legacy lives on in this powerful sculpture.

The Obélisque oblique is free to view. It’s accessible year-round. It’s a striking piece of public art. Its sharp lines and reflective surface catch the light. It’s more than a sculpture. It’s a piece of history. It’s a conversation starter. It’s a testament to the enduring power of art. It’s the Obélisque oblique. Remember its story.
