Obai-ji temple wasn’t always known by this name. Originally christened Obai-an, it was erected in 1562 by the mighty Oda Nobunaga as a tribute to his late father. Years later, after Nobunaga’s tragic demise, his loyal vassal, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, expanded and renamed the temple Obai-ji in 1589. Hideyoshi enlisted the expertise of Sen no Rikyu, the celebrated tea master, to design the exquisite Jikichu-tei garden. This moss-laden sanctuary, adorned with a serene dry pond and vibrant maple trees, transforms into a breathtaking spectacle during autumn. The meticulously preserved Hondō and Kuri buildings, designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, stand as silent witnesses to Obai-ji’s enduring legacy.
