Oasis Christian Church started in Pastor Joey Steelman’s heart. The name Oasis stuck with him. He didn’t know why at the time. In 2008 he was asked to lead a small church. It was near foreclosure. It had less than 50 people. Pastor Joey had no church staff experience. He set out by faith. He turned a dying church into a life-giving hub. It became a place of hope and inspiration. People from all backgrounds were welcome. They experienced Jesus in unconventional ways.
Joey and Jennifer Steelman exemplify turning tragedy into triumph. Both grew up in Sacramento. They had similar life experiences in different environments. Abuse pain and violence marked their stories. Then Jesus came into their lives. He replaced tragedy with a triumphant life in Christ.
Oasis Christian Church believes the Bible is the sole basis of faith. It is God-inspired trustworthy and the final authority. Based on the Bible there is one God. He sent his Son for our sins. Jesus died on the cross as our substitute. The Holy Spirit draws believers to Christ. He equips them for personal growth. Oasis Church aims to glorify God. It makes him known.
Oasis Christian Church is part of the Restoration Movement. It is not just another denomination. It has not chosen a man-made name or creed. Its members are simply called Christians. Congregations are known as Churches of Christ. These terms are scriptural. They are based upon the Word of God. Oasis claims to be Christians only. They are not the only Christians but Christians only. Their creed is Christ. Their book of doctrine is the Bible.
Oasis Christian Church began in 2005. Michael Gray was the founding pastor. They held services at Cedar Ridge Elementary School. They had no official building. In 2010 Greg Smith became the senior pastor. Michael Gray was called to another ministry. Greg Smith is from Kentucky. He has over 25 years of pastoral experience.
In 2013 Oasis Christian Church remodeled an old gym. This became their new home. They average around 450 people every Sunday. Pueblo Christian Academy meets in their facility. It houses about 40 students from kindergarten to high school.
