Tired of Milan’s urban sprawl? Then allow me to introduce you to Oasi Levadina. It is a hidden gem where nature thrives.
Oasi Levadina offers a refreshing escape within the bustling city. This naturalistic oasis spans approximately 12 hectares. It lies within the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano. Oasi Levadina provides a sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna.
Once upon a time, this land served as a construction material depot for ENI. The area was donated to the municipality of San Donato Milanese. A significant transformation took place in 2008. This involved planting 8,000 native trees and shrubs. The project Metro Bosco played a vital role in this green initiative. WWF and LIPU contributed to the area’s redevelopment. They received support from the Cariplo Foundation.
Today, Oasi Levadina is under the watchful eye of WWF Sud Milano volunteers. The area boasts a rich variety of natural habitats. These habitats are influenced by the Lambro River’s flood patterns. You’ll find everything from riverbanks to ponds here. There are woodlands and areas of meadows. The Pennsylvania fountain adds to the area’s charm.
Over 136 plant species have been recorded here. Around 14% are considered rare. The woods feature hornbeams and blackthorns. Water lentils flourish in the ponds. Veronica beccabunga thrives nearby.
Despite its proximity to urban areas, Oasi Levadina teems with wildlife. It is an ornithological hotspot. Herons are abundant. They feed on fish from the Lambro and surrounding ditches. You might spot a red fox or a weasel. Lucky visitors might even see a turtle.
The Oasi Levadina also provides educational opportunities. There are guided tours for school groups and visitors. Informational panels enhance the learning experience. Keep an eye out for fireflies on warm evenings. These tiny beetles light up the humid areas west of Oasi Levadina.
The Oasi Levadina is generally open to the public during the spring and early autumn months. Evening openings are available when the fireflies are active. WWF Sud Milano announces the schedule on social media. The Oasi Levadina is a testament to what we can achieve. We can transform industrial sites into thriving ecosystems. This oasis offers a tranquil retreat. It is a place where nature and urban life intertwine.
