But here at Oase, in the heart of Paramaribo, you’ll quickly discover why this sports club and its refreshing facilities are far from unnecessary. Oase has been a beloved institution since its inception in 1951. It all began with a vision by Jan Albert van Kessel, who, shortly after arriving in Suriname, saw the need for a place where people could cool off and engage in sports. His initial attempts to establish the club met with lukewarm reception. Undeterred, van Kessel began digging the pool himself, his determination sparking the interest of others. Within a month, Oase had the 80 members needed to secure funding and open its doors. The original Oase boasted a swimming pool, a kiddie pool, a clubhouse with a bar, wooden changing rooms, and even its own water well. Oase started with about 4900 m2. Oase has expanded its facilities and grounds over the years. It now offers tennis courts, football fields, a basketball court, a volleyball court, a gym, and a jogging track. This growth reflects the club’s commitment to providing diverse recreational opportunities for its 1500 members. From medical fitness and group training sessions to competitive sports for all ages, Oase has something for everyone. It has nurtured talented athletes who have competed at national and international levels, including swimmers representing Suriname in continental tournaments and footballers selected for national teams.
