Born from unity Oakshaw Trinity Church stands as a testament to collaboration. Its story began not in a single moment but over years of shared faith. In the early 1980s four congregations Paisley High St John’s Orr Square Churches of Scotland and Paisley Congregational Church joined forces. They formed The Wynd Centre an ecumenical outreach. This marked the first step towards a remarkable union.

The Wynd Centre thrived. It fostered a sense of community and shared purpose. By 1987 these churches decided to formalize their bond. They created a Joint Strategy Committee. The committee aimed for better coordination and service to the community. The benefits of unity became clear. The committee began planning a single ecumenical church in Paisley’s heart.

In 1990 a proposal called the Basis and Plan of Union was published. It was distributed to every household in each congregation. Congregational meetings followed. Everyone was informed before a final decision. Later that year Paisley High St John’s and Paisley Congregational Churches overwhelmingly accepted the plan. Orr Square however did not.

Despite this setback the remaining three churches pressed on. In May 1991 the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland gave its unanimous support. September 1991 witnessed the birth of Oakshaw Trinity Church. The congregations merged their traditions. It was a significant moment.

Oakshaw Trinity’s journey didn’t end there. The retirement of Reverend Robert Morrison in 1994 led to Orr Square Church joining the union. This completed the vision. Oakshaw Trinity now owned four church buildings and halls. Three had to be sold. After many discussions the former Paisley High Church was renovated as the main worship centre. The former St John’s became a community outreach hall. The Orr Square building was sold. The former Congregational building was sold to PACE a youth theatre group.

The renovation of the former Paisley High Church began in September 1993. It was finished a year later. In October 1994 Oakshaw Trinity celebrated its first service in its new worship centre. The building required a significant refurbishment. The project cost a considerable sum. It was a major undertaking for the church.

Today Oakshaw Trinity stands as a symbol of unity and cooperation. The Wynd Centre which helped create the church continues its outreach work. Oakshaw Trinity is one of the few church unions driven by member desire not higher authorities. Its story reminds us that even amidst challenges faith can build bridges and overcome differences. The church remains a vital part of Paisley. Its mission continues to serve the community through its worship and outreach programmes. Oakshaw Trinity Church is more than a building it is a community bound by faith and shaped by the resilience of its members.
