Do you hear that rustling? It is the sound of history whispering from the trees here at Oakland Cemetery. Founded as Atlanta Cemetery in 1850 it was later renamed Oakland Cemetery in 1872. The name honors the majestic oak and magnolia trees surrounding us.
Oakland Cemetery is more than a burial ground. It is a beautiful garden. It is also a historical landmark. It is located near the heart of downtown Atlanta. Oakland Cemetery offers a glimpse into Atlanta’s past.
Here at Oakland Cemetery, famous Atlantans rest. We have Bobby Jones the golf legend. Margaret Mitchell the author of “Gone With the Wind” rests here. Also, Maynard Jackson Atlanta’s first black mayor is here.
Imagine soldiers of the Civil War. They fought and died. Now, they rest in peace here at Oakland Cemetery. Nearly 7000 Confederate soldiers are buried here. Some 16 Union soldiers also rest among their former enemies.
Notice the Lion of the Confederacy. This stone lion guards over 3000 unknown Confederate soldiers. The Confederate Obelisk is another Civil War monument. It was once the tallest structure in Atlanta.
Oakland Cemetery also has a black section. This section reflects the segregation era. Many graves here lack headstones due to the cost.
Oakland Cemetery is a peaceful oasis. However, more than 70000 souls rest here. There are only around 40000 markers. Some plots have family monuments instead of individual markers. Some markers were wooden and have disintegrated. Approximately 7500 people are buried in Potter’s Field without markers.

Oakland Cemetery is owned by the City of Atlanta. The city maintains the infrastructure. The Historic Oakland Foundation manages tours and events. They also manage restoration projects.
Keep an eye out for damaged markers. Most damage is not from vandalism. It is due to age, weather, or erosion. Please do not climb on the monuments.
Oakland Cemetery is open from dawn until dusk. It is free to visit. Leashed dogs are welcome. Feel free to pack a picnic. Grills and fires are not allowed.
Consider joining a guided tour. Special events take place throughout the year. In October, Halloween tours are especially popular. Volunteers are always welcome. They lead tours and work in the gardens.
