Oak Park Missionary Baptist Church

Oak Park Missionary Baptist Church began its journey in a home on Dartmouth Street in Oak Park, Michigan. On April 13, 1980, a small group, led by Reverend Charles W. Swain, gathered to organize the church. Just two weeks later, the first service echoed through the halls of Clinton Junior High School. Fourteen devoted souls formed the core of this new community. Their roots lay in Springhill Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, but they carried Dr. James E. Moss’s blessings as they embarked on this new path. Oak Park Missionary Baptist Church’s story is one of resilience. Forced to relocate when Clinton Junior High closed, the congregation found a temporary haven in Einstein Elementary School. Reverend Swain’s official installation as pastor, a landmark moment, took place there on August 3, 1980. The early years saw the church blossom. The first officers were elected, and the church’s foundations were laid. Donations, both large and small, poured in. A twenty-dollar bill became a symbol of the community’s faith, and twenty-four Bibles, a gift from Reverend Frank Norman, provided spiritual sustenance. From hymnals to communion supplies, each donation was a step forward. The church’s spirit thrived. A Sunday school, a male chorus, and a youth usher board sprang to life, filling the church with energy and purpose. Solomon King, first ordained deacon, became a pillar of the church. Mother Ruby Washington, the first Mother of the Church, provided guidance and comfort. Oak Park Missionary Baptist Church continued to grow. Deacons were ordained, ministries were formed, and the church family expanded. Even amidst these developments, the congregation never lost sight of its core mission: spiritual growth and community service. The church’s physical journey mirrored its spiritual one. In 1991, the dream of a permanent home was realized. The church moved to its current location on Wordsworth Street in Ferndale. The building became a canvas for the community’s generosity. From a new furnace to a pastor’s goblet, each donation added to the church’s unique tapestry. The church continued to flourish, adding ministries, expanding outreach, and solidifying its place in the community. Reverend Swain’s legacy, thirty-three years of devoted service, ended in 2013. After a diligent search, Reverend Ray Anthony Ruffin Jr. stepped into the role of pastor in 2015. He carried the torch of faith, leading the church into a new era. Pastor Ruffin’s tenure saw Oak Park Missionary Baptist Church further strengthen its commitment to service and community. The church’s story continues. Now under the guidance of Pastor Stephen L. Murphy Sr., Oak Park Missionary Baptist Church shines brightly as “The Lighthouse on the Corner.” It remains a beacon of faith, a place where community thrives, and service illuminates the path.
