Did you know that the O2 Academy Glasgow started its life as a cinema? It’s a building with many past lives. The O2 Academy Glasgow on Eglinton Street stands as a beacon for music lovers. This venue has a rich history and continues to host incredible performances.

Originally, the O2 Academy Glasgow was the New Bedford Cinema. This transformation from cinema to music venue involved a significant refurbishment. The project cost £3 million. It helped turn the old cinema into a 2500-capacity venue. The O2 Academy Glasgow finally opened on March 26 2003. Deacon Blue Bryan Ferry and the Sugababes marked the opening with their performances.

Before becoming a music venue, the building served different purposes. It first served as a church. Later, it became the Bedford Cinema in 1921. In 1932, the New Bedford Cinema opened. It featured an Art Deco style. But by 1973, the cinema closed. It then became a bingo hall.

In 2008, Telefónica Europe, who owns the O2 Network, became the sponsor. They rebranded all Academy venues as “The O2 Academy”. This included the O2 Academy Glasgow.

The O2 Academy Glasgow has hosted many famous artists. The Killers’ 2006 gig sold out in just three minutes. James Brown also played his last UK gig here in 2006. Many other artists like Arctic Monkeys Radiohead and Adele have graced its stage.
