The O-nami-bashi Bridge wasn’t always the elegant structure you see today. It began as one of five bridges built during the Genroku period (1688-1703). These bridges, including O-nami-bashi, Watanabebashi, Tanonobashi, Horiebashi, and Funatsubashi, were essential to the development of the Dojima area. The name “O-nami-bashi” itself carries a touch of poetic charm, derived from a place name mentioned in a poem by a Manyo poet. Fast forward to 1910, the age of the streetcar arrived in Osaka. The old bridge was replaced with a sturdy iron structure to accommodate the new mode of transport. The O-nami-bashi Bridge continued to evolve with the city. During the Taisho era, it underwent a significant renovation alongside the nearby Yodoyabashi Bridge. This wasn’t just any renovation. A design competition, a rare occurrence for bridge projects, was held. Entries poured in from all corners of Japan, showcasing the nation’s architectural ingenuity. Ultimately, Tatsuo Otani’s vision was chosen. His design brought forth the four-span arch bridge we admire today. Completed in 1935, the O-nami-bashi Bridge stretches 81.5 meters in length and 37 meters in width. Its steel-framed reinforced concrete structure and distinctive handrails speak to the craftsmanship of the era. Even after two renovations, the bridge remains remarkably true to Otani’s original design, a timeless landmark in the heart of Osaka. One charming detail often overlooked is the name plate. It’s not just any plate. The calligraphy is a personal touch, handwritten by Mayor Sekiichi himself.
