“Look at the way that statue seems to welcome us!” Standing before the “O Génio Acolhedor da Cidade do Porto”, you might be surprised by its relatively recent history. While Porto boasts centuries-old monuments, this artwork, perched atop the towers of the Ponte da Arrábida elevators, dates back to 1963. It was on June 22nd that this “Welcoming Genius of the City of Porto”, a collaborative effort between artists Barata Feyo and Gustavo Bastos, was unveiled. The statue embodies the spirit of Porto, a city deeply rooted in history yet always embracing the new. As you admire the “O Génio Acolhedor da Cidade do Porto”, think about the countless journeys it has witnessed – people crossing the Ponte da Arrábida, each with their own story.
