A symphony of gushing water. That’s how the Nymphaeum in Amman must have sounded in its heyday. Can you imagine the sheer scale of this Roman public fountain? It once boasted a pool of 600 square meters, holding three meters of continuously flowing water. The Nymphaeum, situated near the Hashemite Plaza, the Roman Theater, and the Odeon, dates back to the 2nd century CE. It was a vibrant hub in Philadelphia, as Amman was then known. The city embraced these fountains, symbols of prosperity and social life. This particular Nymphaeum wasn’t just a water source. It was a work of art, a testament to Roman engineering. The two-story structure featured intricate carvings, mosaics, and niches for statues. Imagine the sunlight glinting off the water, reflecting the colorful mosaics. The air would have been cool and refreshing, a welcome respite from the Jordanian sun. Three large apses, each about 12 meters high, dominated the structure. They were adorned with Corinthian columns and topped with semi-domes. Sadly, these domes likely crumbled during the earthquakes of the 7th century. But even in its partially preserved state, the Nymphaeum whispers stories of its glorious past. Restoration efforts have breathed new life into this ancient fountain. In 2015, students and technicians meticulously cleaned and repaired the stonework. They replaced lost portions and stabilized the existing structure. Their work ensures that the Nymphaeum continues to inspire awe in visitors for generations to come.
