Why are there so many simple wooden crosses? We are standing here at the Nyanza Genocide Memorial. This site holds a somber significance in Rwanda’s history. It is a poignant reminder of the horrific genocide that ravaged this nation in 1994. The Nyanza Genocide Memorial stands as a testament to the brutal consequences of hatred and prejudice. This memorial marks the place where over 2,000 Tutsi souls tragically lost their lives during the Rwandan genocide. These Tutsis, seeking refuge at the nearby ETO school, were promised protection by the United Nations Peacekeeping force. However, when the UN withdrew, these innocent lives were left vulnerable and were tragically massacred. The simple wooden crosses, each marking a life lost, serve as a chilling reminder of the international community’s failure to protect those in desperate need. Each year on April 11th, a solemn memorial ceremony is held here. It is a time for remembrance, reflection, and a stark reminder of the importance of peace and understanding. The Nyanza Genocide Memorial stands as a symbol of both tragedy and resilience, a testament to the enduring human spirit.
