Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? The Nürtingen Grundschule stands before you. Its very bricks whisper tales of Berlin’s past.

The Nürtingen Grundschule isn’t just a school. It’s a living testament to Berlin’s rich history. It sits on a campus of buildings. Each building has its own story to tell. One building the orange house dates back to 1876. It began as the Leibniz Gymnasium a boys’ school. Imagine young Martin Gropius learning within those walls. He’d become a famous architect.

The yellow building a former community school stands nearby. It served the neighborhood for many years. Even the red building steeped in history underwent extensive renovations. This building opened around 1893. It served as a community school for both boys and girls. The high ceilings tell a tale of expensive land prices. This was just before 1900. Between the red and yellow buildings sits a small building. It’s now the school’s cafeteria. Originally it served as a small gymnasium.

The school’s grounds hold a small garden house. This last reminder of the Späth family’s gardens once stretched between Köpenicker Straße and Wrangelstraße. Today you can find edible plants from around the city on the cafeteria tables. It’s part of the Stadtapotheke project.

The buildings bear scars of the past. Bullet holes in cellars. Phosphorous traces from air raid shelters. These are reminders of the Second World War and the Nazi era. Sadly the school’s archives lack records of this dark period.

After 1945 life slowly resumed. The neighborhood struggled with poverty. Immigrants seeking work came to Berlin. Children from many countries learned together. The chronicles tell stories of both cooperation and discrimination against these so-called “guest workers” and their children.

Since the 1960s the campus has undergone multiple transformations. The aim was to create a beautiful modern learning environment. The Montessori approach was adopted. New buildings and playgrounds were added. Student-led initiatives shaped the learning spaces. The school celebrates diversity.

The school’s local history archive Die Remise is a treasure trove. It houses a commented school chronicle and meeting minutes. These documents have been examined for traces of racism. The Remise hosts exhibitions and cultural projects. These are planned and executed by students residents educators and artists. The Nürtingen Grundschule is more than just a school. It’s a vibrant community hub a place where history echoes in every corner. A place where the future is shaped by its past.
