“Game, set, match!” The roar of the crowd echoes in my ears, even now. We stand before the Nungambakkam SDAT Stadium, a place where tennis history has been made. This stadium, also known as the Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium, isn’t just a sporting venue. It’s a crucible of dreams, a stage for triumphs, and a testament to the power of human athleticism. Built in 1995 by the Government of Tamil Nadu for the South Asian Federation Games, Nungambakkam SDAT Stadium quickly became a landmark in Chennai. Since 1997, it has hosted the annual Indian Open, now the Chennai Open ATP Tennis Championships, every January. The stadium’s five hard courts, including the floodlit center court with its 5,800-seat capacity, have witnessed incredible moments. Think back to 1998, when legends like Boris Becker and Patrick Rafter graced this very ground. Rafter ultimately clinched the victory, but the matches were unforgettable. Nungambakkam SDAT Stadium also played a pivotal role in the rise of Indian tennis doubles. It was here that the celebrated pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi won the first three editions of the Goldflake Open. Their victories ignited a passion for tennis in India, inspiring a new generation of players.
