NSG Grävingholz

Hidden within Dortmund’s urban sprawl lies the NSG Gräv­ing­holz, a sanctuary of ancient trees and hidden stories. This expansive woodland, nestled west of the bustling B54, spans nearly 124 hectares. The NSG Gräv­ing­holz, designated a protected area in 2005, straddles the districts of Holthausen, Brechten, Eving, and Lindenhorst. Its neighbor to the east, across the B54, is another protected area, the Naturschutzgebiet Süggel. NSG Gräv­ing­holz is more than just trees. It holds whispers of history, dating back to the last ice age. Imagine this land, freshly thawed, slowly reclaiming itself with life. Over centuries, it became a hunting ground for the Counts of Dortmund. Today, the NSG Gräv­ing­holz boasts a majestic stand of primarily beech trees, some with trunks reaching an impressive 6 meters in circumference. Scattered amongst them are oaks and ashes. Beneath their canopy thrives a rich undergrowth of wood melick and ilex. This diverse ecosystem provides a haven for a variety of wildlife. Woodpeckers, hawks, and stock doves find refuge in the old trees. The Holthauser Bach, a small stream, originates within the NSG Gräv­ing­holz, its source a network of springs and seeps. Bomb craters from World War II, now transformed into small wetlands, add another layer of biodiversity. These unexpected oases support rare plants and amphibians like the great crested newt, smooth newt, common toad, grass frog, and pond frog. A network of paths invites exploration by foot or bicycle. However, remember to keep your canine companions leashed to protect this delicate ecosystem. For a convenient visit, take the U41 Stadtbahn line directly to the “Gräv­ing­holz” stop. The NSG Gräv­ing­holz is a testament to nature’s resilience, a place where history, biodiversity, and urban life intersect. Its preservation secures a vital green corridor within Dortmund’s northern landscape.
