Nowon-gu wasn’t always a bustling academic center. Formed in 1988 from Dobong District Nowon-gu’s early days were humbler. It was designed as a bedroom community. A place for those who couldn’t afford more central locations. High-rise apartment buildings shot up. Many small and somewhat remote from city centers.
But Nowon-gu didn’t stay small. Its population boomed. The Gyeongchun and Gyeongwon Lines of the Korean National Railroad helped. So did subway lines four six and seven. Nowon Station became a crucial transportation hub. Businesses followed. Lotte Department Store is a testament to this growth. It started smaller but evolved into one of the most luxurious in Northeast Seoul.
Nowon-gu isn’t just about education and transport. The Seoul Urban Life Museum opened in 2019. The Jungnangcheon stream winds through the district providing a scenic escape. Mount Suraksan and Bukhansan frame its northeast boundary offering hiking opportunities.
