Hidden amidst the bustling sprawl of Milan lies Novate Milanese. A small town with a rich history. Its story unfolds not in grand palaces but in humble beginnings. Novate Milanese first appears in written records in 877. A notary’s document details the acquisition of land by priests. This land belonged to the Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio in Milan. At that time Novate Milanese was a rural settlement. It was part of the contado della Martesana. This was an agricultural district between Milan and Lake Como.

The political landscape shifted frequently. Novate Milanese passed under various rulers. These included the Visconti and the Sforza families. In 1385 Giangaleazzo Visconti moved Novate Milanese from the contado della Martesana to the contado di Milano. This brought it closer to the power center of Milan. Novate Milanese followed Milan’s tumultuous political history for years. It also played a role in local events. A notable figure was Bertola da Novate. He was a skilled hydraulic engineer. He worked on various canal projects under the Visconti and Sforza. His expertise shaped Novate Milanese’s environment for generations.

Later Novate Milanese became a feudal possession. It joined Roserio under the same ruling family. This lasted until 1800 when feudal rights were abolished. The Napoleonic era brought change. Novate Milanese joined the Italian Kingdom after the Second War of Independence. In 1862 it officially adopted the name Novate Milanese. This avoided confusion with other similarly named towns.

Today Novate Milanese blends its agricultural roots with industrial growth. The presence of the Milano-Saronno railway spurred industrial development. Industries such as textiles and metalworking emerged. The town’s identity is shaped by its past. Yet it remains vibrant. The churches of Santi Gervaso e Protaso and Sacra Famiglia stand as testaments to faith and community. Many historical villas dot the landscape. These silent witnesses to generations past add to Novate Milanese’s unique charm. Its story reflects the evolution of Lombardy. Novate Milanese successfully integrates history and modernity. It remains a fascinating destination for those seeking a glimpse into Italian history and culture.
