Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Notre-Dame du Rosaire stands here today. It is a testament to faith and architectural vision. This chapel is more than just bricks and mortar. It embodies a community’s spiritual heart.
Notre-Dame du Rosaire is a modern chapel. It is located in the Saint-Maurice Pellevoisin district of Lille. Consecrated to Our Lady of the Rosary, it adheres to the Tridentine Rite. This is also known as the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite. The chapel belongs to the Priory of the Holy Cross. This priory is under the authority of the Society of Saint Pius X.
Let’s take a step back in time. In 1986, this site housed the Devylerre knitting workshops. The building’s interior was transformed. It became a space suitable for Latin Mass. It followed the extraordinary form of the Roman Rite. It was then christened Notre-Dame du Rosaire.
However, a new structure was needed. It had to better serve the worshipers. Despite administrative delays, the project gained momentum. Demolition began under architect Benoît Deryckere.
In 2005, the new chapel was blessed. Bishop de Galarreta consecrated the altar that October. The chapel’s dedication marked a new chapter. Abbot Berteaux consecrated the Northern District to the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary. This took place on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
Notre-Dame du Rosaire boasts modern architecture. Yet it blends classical forms. The facade features red-orange bricks. A large wrought-iron cross tops the gable. Three large wooden doors adorn the entrance.
Inside, the chapel is simple. It measures 12 meters wide and 25 meters long. The exposed internal framework adds warmth. The chancel is bathed in natural light. It contrasts the nave’s semi-darkness. A stone altar and a large crucifix dominate the chancel.
Let’s talk about the furniture. The sculpted altar weighs one and a half tons. It consists of white stone and blue stone from Tournai. A polychrome stone statue of Our Lady of the Rosary stands to the left of the chancel entrance. A terracotta Stations of the Cross with warm colors lines the side walls. The baptismal font is sculpted from the same stones as the altar. It sits at the left entrance to the nave. Finally, a statue of Saint Joseph completes the interior.
