“What a beacon of faith” I thought seeing Notre-Dame de la Garde in Montreal. This church stands as a testament to the enduring Catholic tradition in this city. Today, we will delve into the story of this beautiful parish.

Notre-Dame de la Garde was canonically erected on December 11, 1944. The church itself was constructed between 1947 and 1948. It quickly became a focal point for the local Catholic community.

The parish is located in the Verdun borough of Montreal. It is situated at 785 avenue Breault. Notre-Dame de la Garde has deep roots in this area. The village of La Rivière Saint-Pierre was created in 1875. It was formed from the parish of Notre-Dame. The village changed its name to Verdun the following year. Verdun gained city status in 1907. It became the cité de Verdun in 1912. The area reverted to ville de Verdun in 1982. Verdun was eventually annexed to Montreal in 2002.

Joseph-Armand Dutrisac designed the church. Charles Duranceau was the builder. Their combined efforts resulted in the beautiful structure we see today. Notre-Dame de la Garde has been a vital part of the community.

Throughout its history Notre-Dame de la Garde has served a growing population. In 1871, the parish of Notre-Dame had 11405 residents. By 1911, Verdun had grown to 11629 residents. The population continued to increase significantly over the decades. This growth underscores the importance of Notre-Dame de la Garde.

Even today Notre-Dame de la Garde remains an active parish. Services are held in French. You can attend mass on Sundays at 10:30 AM.

Notre-Dame de la Garde also holds special celebrations during Holy Week and Easter. These services are conducted in French. They are held at Saint Thomas More Church. Saint Thomas More is located at 980 Moffat Avenue.
