Did you know that the only person buried in Notre-Dame Basilica’s crypt is its architect? This magnificent structure standing before us is Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture. It’s not just a church it’s a living testament to Montreal’s rich history and faith.

Notre-Dame Basilica has a captivating history. It began as a simple parish church in 1672. By the 1820s the original church was too small. So James O’Donnell an Irish-American Anglican was commissioned to design a new one. Ironically he was a Protestant at the time. He envisioned a church that could accommodate up to 10000 people. O’Donnell’s design incorporated elements of the Gothic Revival movement. He was a visionary architect.

Construction of Notre-Dame Basilica lasted from 1824 to 1829. The sanctuary was finished in 1830. The towers followed later. The interior was a collaborative effort. François Baillairgé designed the choir and decorated the facade and vaults. Victor Bourgeau added to the opulent interior design later. He drew inspiration from the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. The result was a breathtaking space filled with rich colors gold leaf and intricate carvings. This is unlike any other church.

The stained-glass windows are particularly noteworthy. They don’t depict biblical scenes but rather significant moments in Montreal’s religious history. This is unique. The church also boasts a Casavant Frères pipe organ built in 1891. It is a magnificent instrument with 7000 pipes. It’s considered a remarkable example of craftsmanship.

Notre-Dame Basilica isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s also a significant cultural landmark. It’s hosted many important events including the funerals of Maurice “Rocket” Richard and Pierre Elliott Trudeau. It was also the site of Celine Dion’s wedding. Millions of people visit Notre-Dame Basilica annually making it one of North America’s most popular attractions. In 2023 Angi a home service publication ranked it the 6th most beautiful building in the world.
