Nossa Senhora do Amparo

Hidden amongst the rolling hills of Alfena, lies the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Amparo. This church, dedicated to Our Lady of Protection, holds a story as rich and layered as the weathered stones that form its walls. Nossa Senhora do Amparo isn’t just a building. It is a testament to the enduring faith of a community, a beacon that has guided generations through turbulent times. The parish of Benfica, where Nossa Senhora do Amparo stands, has existed since the late 14th century. Back then, it was a scattering of farmsteads. It wasn’t until the early 18th century that a concentrated village began to form around the church. The current Nossa Senhora do Amparo is actually the third church built on this sacred spot. Construction of the present church started in August 1750. The design, imbued with the elegance of Italian Baroque, was entrusted to the renowned architect João Frederico Ludovice. Then disaster struck. The devastating earthquake of 1755 tested the very foundations of the rising structure, halting construction. Work resumed in 1780 under architect João Gomes. But the path to completion was fraught with challenges. Nossa Senhora do Amparo finally opened its doors in 1809, almost six decades after the first stone was laid. Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by the breathtaking chancel. Constructed entirely of marble, it exudes a sense of grandeur and serenity. Two marble balustraded tribunes flank the spacious area. Above, a large throne opening, nestled between rosy marble Corinthian columns, points towards a triangular apex, a symbol of the Holy Trinity. The Italian Baroque influence is visible in the church’s facade, while the choir ceiling boasts intricate stucco work. Look up at the church’s main ceiling, a masterpiece by Pereira Cão. The stucco panels, resembling stones, depict various invocations from the Litany of Our Lady. The chancel houses a remarkable panel by Pedro Alexandrino. Other side chapels feature religious artwork by Teresa de Matos and Pedro Alexandrino, adding to the church’s artistic richness. Nossa Senhora do Amparo sits within a large cobblestone courtyard, accessed by two staircases. One staircase is adorned with a marble cross, a silent sentinel welcoming worshippers. Part of the courtyard now houses the Parish Center, built between 1959 and 1964, blending harmoniously with the church. Nossa Senhora do Amparo is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the unwavering faith and dedication of the Alfena community.
