Think of a humble beginning. Five families dreamed of a church. That church would be dedicated to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This dream took root in northwest Houston. It would become Northwest Memorial Baptist Church.
In July 1973, with no building, they started. They had no property or offices. Yet they believed in God’s ability. They trusted His willingness to work through them.
Their first Sunday saw them meeting in two homes. Only 19 people attended. But these founding families planned to reach everyone in northwest Houston. At their first service, held in a local school on July 1, 1973, 236 people were present. The church was already growing fast.
The early outreach was built on a bus ministry. Children from all over the area were brought in. The ministry began on the bus itself. There were songs, stories, and interactive teaching. By May 17, 1975, Northwest Memorial Baptist had a record attendance. 969 people came to worship.
In 1984, the associate pastor and other members started an adoption agency. It was named New Life Children’s Services. The church’s impact reached beyond its walls.
In 1990, the church changed its name. It became Houston Northwest Baptist Church. This reflected its growing influence.
Since the 1990s, the church has supported many missionaries. It has planted a church near Seattle, Washington. It continues to train pastors for church planting in Houston. The church’s mission expanded far and wide.
In 2017, Hurricane Harvey caused extensive damage. The HNW campus suffered greatly. The worship center was the only building that didn’t flood. It became a hub for community disaster relief.
By 2020, the rebuild was complete. Adult and student spaces were renovated. A new “green space” was created. It stood on the site of the original worship center. A new Commons area and Kids Building were added. The church emerged stronger.
Houston Northwest Baptist Church is excited about the future. It continues its mission. They want to make Houston more like Heaven. They aim to help Houstonians become more like Jesus. This is their ongoing commitment.
