Imagine a whimsical fortress suddenly appearing amid a typical Los Angeles neighborhood. That’s Northridge Castle.
Welcome to a unique landmark. Northridge Castle stands at 17231 Gresham Street. It is not a royal residence, but the creation of a film animator.
Back in the 90s, this animator decided to build his own Spanish Revival Medieval castle. He included a moat and a sword in stone. A life-size dragon graces the front yard.
Northridge Castle is quite famous. The castle is located in the San Fernando district of Los Angeles.
Let’s step back in time a bit. The area now known as Northridge has a rich history. Over 2,000 years ago, the Tongva people inhabited this land. They were known as the “people of the earth”. Their village, Totonga, was right here in the Northridge area.
Fast forward to the 1840s. Mexican Governor Pio Pico sold land to Eulogio de Celis. De Celis, a native of Spain, became a prominent agriculturist. His real estate was valued at $20,000.
Later, de Celis’ heirs divided the land. Senator George K. Porter and Senator Charles Maclay acquired a large portion. Porter focused on ranching. Maclay envisioned subdivision and colonization.
In 1908, the Southern Pacific Railroad laid tracks here. The Hawk Ranch was sold for subdivision. It was then renamed Zelzah in 1910.
The name Zelzah comes from a biblical term for an oasis. This referred to a water well in the area. The Zelzah Train Station was near Parthenia Avenue and Reseda Boulevard.
By 1938, the community was renamed Northridge Village. Carl S. Dentzel, a local leader, suggested the change. Eventually, it was shortened to Northridge.
Northridge transformed after World War II. Agricultural land became suburban homes. San Fernando Valley State College opened in 1956. Now known as California State University, Northridge.
In 1994, the Northridge earthquake shook the region. Though the epicenter was technically in Reseda. The earthquake caused widespread damage.
Yet, amidst all this history, Northridge Castle remains a singular vision. A testament to creativity. A quirky landmark that captures the imagination.
