Northern Gate. A silent sentinel. It has witnessed centuries of Beijing’s history. The Northern Gate, known as Deshengmen during the Ming and Qing dynasties, holds a powerful significance. It was through this gate that armies, both victorious and vanquished, marched. Deshengmen translates to “Gate of Virtuous Victory”. It was the entry point for the Ming and Qing dynasties after their respective victories. Imagine the triumphant processions of the Ming, having overthrown the Yuan, entering Beijing through the Northern Gate. Then, centuries later, picture the Qing repeating history, using the same gate after their victory over the Ming. This gate wasn’t just for military processions. It also held a superstitious significance for those dealing in weaponry. Carts carrying weapons would pass through Deshengmen, seeking good fortune. The gate’s importance in military matters is further highlighted by its location. Unlike southern Beijing, which had an outer city as an additional layer of defense, the north side had no such buffer. This made Deshengmen a crucial strategic point, often the site of fierce battles. The gate tower was a formidable structure, measuring 31.5 meters by 16.8 meters and standing 36 meters tall. The barbican, a fortified outpost, was even more impressive, spanning 70 meters by 118 meters. It was the second largest in Beijing, surpassed only by Zhengyangmen. Within the barbican, a Zhenwu temple stood at the center of the northern side, facing south. Today, only the archery tower and the barbican of the original complex remain. However, visiting the site, you can still sense the echoes of history, the weight of past victories and defeats, and the gate’s enduring link to Beijing’s rich past.
