Marvelous Northern Gate isn’t it? This imposing structure stands as the sole surviving gate of Hanoi’s ancient citadel. Built in 1805 during the Nguyen Dynasty it replaced an earlier gate from the Le Dynasty. The Northern Gate also known as Chinh Bac Mon is more than just a gateway. It’s a testament to Vietnam’s resilience.

Imagine imperial troops stationed in the watchtower gazebo. This eight-roofed structure atop an 8.71 meter high 17.08 meter wide wall offered an unparalleled strategic view. From here they could monitor the citadel’s surroundings and the enemy’s movements. Even after the French occupation the watchtower served as a sentry box. It silently witnessed Hanoi’s tumultuous past.

Today partial restoration honors heroes like Nguyen Tri Phuong and Hoang Dieu. These provincial chiefs bravely fought against the French. Locals still pay homage burning incense in their memory. The Northern Gate is not only a historical landmark but also a place of worship.

The gate’s rampart is a masterpiece of stone and brick. The solid brick arch adorned with lotus motifs is stunning. Two massive wooden doors each weighing approximately 16 tons stand guard. Chinese characters above proclaim the gate’s name. Stone carvings of flowers add elegance.

A mystery surrounds the moat. A brick bridge once crossed a 20-meter-wide moat. Historians debate its purpose defensive or otherwise. Beneath the Nguyen Dynasty’s gate lie remnants of earlier citadels. Archaeological excavations revealed traces of the Le Dynasty. These underscore the site’s historical significance. The Northern Gate truly embodies layers of history.

Bullet holes from French cannons remain visible reminders of Hanoi’s strength against invaders. This famous photo spot tells a compelling story of survival and pride. The Northern Gate’s legacy is secure. It stands as a symbol of Vietnam’s rich history and the courage of its people. A visit to the Northern Gate is a visit to the heart of Hanoi’s past.
