Could a university rise from the humble beginnings of a YMCA? That is precisely the origin story of Northeastern University.
Founded in 1898 as the Evening Institute for Younger Men, Northeastern’s journey has been one of constant evolution. Initially offering courses like algebra and bookkeeping, it aimed to provide education to young men with YMCA membership.
Fast forward to 1916, the institute became Northeastern College. Then in 1922, it achieved university status. Northeastern University now stands as the largest university in Massachusetts by enrollment with over 38000 students.
Northeastern’s location is central. The main campus thrives along Huntington and Columbus Avenues near Fenway-Kenmore and Roxbury. Its large urban campus spans 73 acres.
