Did the walls of Northeast Christian Church ever whisper secrets of humble beginnings? In September 1969, a small group of families, around twenty, began meeting as the Northeast Church of Christ. Their first sanctuary? The home of Brother Harold Reeder. Imagine those early gatherings, the shared faith strengthening their community. Northeast Christian Church’s journey wasn’t always easy. The congregation moved from temporary locations to Kirby Junior High School in 1970. By August of that year, attendance grew to 88. They even changed their name to Kirby Church of Christ, later incorporating in 1972 under Texas law. The dream of a permanent home took root. Five acres of land on Farm Road 78, between Kirby and Converse, were purchased for $15,000. Building committees formed, plans were drawn, and bonds were issued. In January 1974, the ground was broken. The congregation celebrated its first service in the new building on August 25, 1974. The church continued to evolve, installing elders in 1975 and deacons soon after. Reflecting the changing neighborhood, the name shifted to Ventura Church of Christ in 1982. Finally, acknowledging the continued growth and surrounding communities, the name Northeast Church of Christ was reclaimed in 2008. Northeast Christian Church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community, a journey from a humble home to a place of worship.
