Located at 1 Raider Circle in Houston, lies Northbrook High School. Northbrook High School opened its doors in 1974. It was built to alleviate overcrowding at Spring Branch and Spring Woods High Schools. The school’s establishment marked a significant moment for the Spring Branch Independent School District.

But what happened when student numbers declined? In the 1980s, Houston’s oil crisis led to job losses. Many families moved away from the Spring Branch area. The district chose to close Spring Branch High School. Many of those students were reassigned to Northbrook High School. This greatly increased its student population.

Did you know Northbrook High School was once a National Blue Ribbon School? This honor was awarded in 1988-89. It recognized the school’s commitment to academic excellence. In 2005, Northbrook received an Academically Acceptable rating from the Texas Education Agency.

The school’s motto is Defying The Odds. Northbrook High School provides courses in traditional academic subjects. Students can also study foreign languages like Spanish and French. The school also provides athletics and fine arts. Several Advanced Placement courses are available at Northbrook.

Northbrook High School has undergone many additions and renovations since its opening. In 2020, the Spring Branch Independent School District acquired land. The district built a detention pond to control flooding. In 2022, a new classroom wing was added. The new wing brought 42265 square feet to the school.

The additions maintained the school’s distinctive architectural style. The work included interior and exterior improvements. The school also upgraded sports areas and added a new roof.

Let’s talk sports at Northbrook High School. The athletic teams compete in baseball, basketball, cross country, and more. Northbrook has a long-standing rivalry with Spring Woods Senior High School. The schools face off at their annual homecoming football games. But interestingly enough Northbrook has never made the football playoffs. The best record was 7-3 in 1981.

In soccer, the Northbrook Raider boys’ program has seen success. They have earned playoff appearances multiple times. They were district champions several times. In 2004, they were regional champions and a 5A State Semi-Finalist.

In 2022, Dr. H. P. Hyder III became the principal. He replaced Dr. Antonio Avalos. The administration change brought more stringent safety measures. Students now need to wear ID badges to enter the school.

Northbrook High School serves several neighborhoods. These include Binglewood, Spring Oaks, and Holley Terrace. Several elementary and middle schools feed into Northbrook High School.

Northbrook High School continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the needs of its students and community. From its humble beginnings in the T-Shacks to its current campus, Northbrook High School stands as a beacon of education. Its enduring spirit of Defying The Odds shows in its students and staff.
