The North San Diego Buddhist Church stands as a beacon of Buddhist tradition in San Diego. Its story began not in quiet contemplation but amidst tragedy. In 1916 the catastrophic failure of the Otay Dam devastated a Japanese farming community. Eleven lives were lost. Out of this profound sorrow came a shared desire for spiritual solace. The North San Diego Buddhist Church emerged ten years later in 1926. Services were initially held on the second floor of a building at Sixth Avenue and Market Street.
The church quickly grew. Its membership expanded. In 1928 a permanent temple was built at Market and 29th Streets the church’s current location. This temple became more than just a place of prayer. It served as a vital center for the Japanese-American community in San Diego.
World War II brought a devastating interruption. The entire Japanese-American community including the church members were unjustly evacuated. The temple grounds were even used as dormitories for defense workers. Tragically in 1943 vandals set the temple on fire causing significant damage.
Yet the spirit of the North San Diego Buddhist Church proved unbreakable. After the war the community returned. They rebuilt their temple. They restored their faith. They reaffirmed their shared bonds. The church resumed its role as a spiritual and cultural anchor for generations.
Today the North San Diego Buddhist Church continues to thrive. It’s a member of the Buddhist Churches of America and maintains ties to the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha in Kyoto Japan. The temple’s beautiful Hondo houses a stunning altar adorned with a gold-leafed statue of Amida Buddha. Here the faithful gather to practice their faith share their lives and find comfort in the timeless teachings of Buddhism.
