Picture the scene. You are standing before North Salt Lake a city born from necessity and shaped by the land itself. Before you lies a valley once swampy and wild. Imagine the first settlers arriving in 1847. They sought pastureland for their cattle. They found hot springs bubbling from the earth. These springs are still active today. They built crude dugouts for shelter then later adobe homes using the clay deposits by the Jordan River.

North Salt Lake wasn’t always a city. For years it was a small collection of farms and businesses nestled alongside the railroad tracks. The land presented challenges. Deep crevices hid in tall grass. Hillsides were rocky unsuitable for many crops. Yet the people persevered. They raised animals. The Schmidt family raised pigs. Samuel S Howard started Bountiful Dairy around 1879. Its products were sold in Salt Lake City.

A store-restaurant called a Halfway House served travelers. A well-traveled road formed. This eventually became US Highway 89/91. Cattle became vital to the area. The Salt Lake Union Stockyards opened in 1895. The railroad made shipping cattle easy. Cudahy Meat Packing Company arrived in 1916. It thrived. Cudahy Lane Center Street today was named after them. The plant shipped processed meats worldwide.

Life wasn’t easy. Water was a precious resource. Natural springs provided much of it. In 1930 most homes and businesses were below Highway 89/91. Sixty-five homes were on the hillside above. A developer’s purchase of the McDuff and McNeil springs created conflict. People below the highway worried about their water. This led to a petition. The citizens wanted to form a town. They wanted control over their water.

On September 3 1946 North Salt Lake became an incorporated town. Amasa Howard appointed the first town board. They used the old Utah Highway Patrol weigh station as town hall. A North Salt Lake Citizens Party was the only political party at that time. Ray Hatch became the first mayor in 1949. North Salt Lake grew. A new municipal building with a fire department opened in 1958. In 1961 North Salt Lake became a third-class city. It continues to grow today. A large industrial center extends west to the Great Salt Lake. Residential growth continues up the eastern hillsides. North Salt Lake’s story is one of resilience adaptation and growth. A testament to the people who shaped this land.
