Founded in faith by A Vernon and Velena Morse in 1911 the North Park Community Advent Christian Church stands proudly on the corner of 29th and Landis Streets. This wasn’t always a brick-and-mortar building. It began humbly as a tent in downtown San Diego. Eight charter members gathered under its canvas roof. Their inspiration? Joel 2:28a “And it shall come to pass that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh.”

The church’s early years were marked by both spiritual growth and physical relocation. A property search committee found two lots at the intersection of Kansas Street now 29th Street and Landis Street. Mr D A Davis a Pasadena resident purchased the land. He held it for the church. In June 1912 the tent moved to its new location. Reverend Samuel Forsey became the first permanent pastor in December 1913.

Mr Davis didn’t just provide land. He gifted the church and parsonage in 1914. It was his thanksgiving to God for his blessings. The church was dedicated on November 11 1914 debt-free a testament to generosity and faith.

The North Park Community Advent Christian Church has weathered many storms. The 1930s saw the Great Depression and a flu epidemic. Wars from World War II to the Gulf War tested the community. Even a local airplane crash in the 1970s didn’t halt their service. These times led to physical changes too. In 1951 the sanctuary expanded. A fellowship hall was added. Renovations in the 1970s replaced the parsonage with a new fellowship hall and kitchen.

The 1990s brought another crucial decision. Many moved to San Diego’s suburbs. The church chose to stay committed to North Park. They undertook a major renovation making the building accessible and earthquake-resistant. This renovation gave the church its current look.

Today the North Park Community Advent Christian Church continues its mission. They sponsor Boy Scout Troop #53. They host Narcotics Anonymous. They partner with organizations like Hospice of San Diego. Their commitment is enduring. They strive to love God and love people. Their story is a testament to faith perseverance and community. Come and be part of this enduring legacy.
