Is “NMB” just an abbreviation or a statement? Many consider North Miami Beach a haven. They view it as a retreat from the fast pace of Miami proper. But North Miami Beach has a unique and vibrant history all its own. It all began in the late 19th century when Captain William H. Fulford laid claim to 160 acres. He was drawn to the area’s natural beauty, with the Oleta River winding through marshes and mangroves. He envisioned a thriving community in this peaceful setting. In 1917, Lafe Allen, a visionary entrepreneur, picked up the torch. He meticulously planned what he called a “perfect city” with wide avenues and green spaces. This was the birth of Fulford-by-the-Sea, the precursor to North Miami Beach. The Florida land boom of the 1920s brought a surge of excitement. Investors flocked to Fulford-by-the-Sea, eager to be part of this promising development. The iconic Carl Fisher, known for creating the Indianapolis Speedway, saw the potential for a winter racing capital. The Fulford-Miami Speedway was then built. This thrilling wooden track with its steeply banked turns drew crowds of 20,000 to witness the roar of engines and the spirit of competition. But nature had other plans. The devastating hurricane of 1926 swept through, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The speedway was lost, and the real estate boom came to an abrupt end. The resilient residents, however, refused to let their dreams be washed away. They united, forming the Town of Fulford. In 1927, it was officially incorporated as the City of Fulford. In 1931, recognizing the allure of the Miami Beach name, the city underwent a transformation. It expanded to encompass beachfront property. The name was changed to North Miami Beach. This marked a new chapter in the city’s evolution. Throughout the following decades, North Miami Beach continued to grow and prosper. New infrastructure, including the construction of State Road 826, drew in businesses and residents. The 163rd Street Shopping Center became a hub of activity. The city invested in its future, building a modern city hall, a public safety building, and the beloved Lafe Allen Memorial Library. A unique piece of history found a home in North Miami Beach. The Ancient Spanish Monastery, originally constructed in Spain in 1141, was carefully dismantled. Its stones were shipped across the Atlantic and painstakingly reassembled in North Miami Beach. Today, this architectural marvel stands as a testament to a bygone era. North Miami Beach has become a vibrant tapestry of cultures, a place where people from all walks of life come together to create a rich and diverse community. It’s a city that has weathered storms, embraced change, and emerged stronger than ever. So, is “NMB” just an abbreviation? Absolutely not.
