Did you know that North Maclean was once a very important place? Right here stood, until the devastating flood of 1947, a bridge that was crucial to getting across the Logan River. The bridge is gone now, but the story of North Maclean and its bridge remains. It all started in the early 1800s. The region was already home to the Yugambeh people who lived on the land for centuries. But in the 1820s the Europeans came. They needed a way to get across the Logan River to explore further North. North Maclean became known as the place where they built a punt to help them do that. It wasn’t until 1940 that the first permanent bridge was built, but it didn’t last long. After a huge flood, the bridge was washed away. This made the place less important for a time. Even though North Maclean has changed a lot since then, some things remain. If you look carefully, you can still find remnants of the bridge, although you will also see a whole lot of houses where the river crossings used to be. North Maclean is still a place that is close to the Logan River. It might be a great place for a coffee on one day, but you’ll better be more prepared if you chose the right day to visit.
